How to support a challenge topic suggestion on wikipedia as a reply?
[edit]I didn't find how to support any challenge topic suggestion appear on wikimedia as I see many do the same with no issues. Need the guide as a beginner. Girlmath (talk) 15:01, 15 February 2026 (UTC)

Support,
Oppose,
Delete,
Keep, etc.? If so, you need to type {{Support}}, {{Oppose}}, etc. when typing in your reply (when replying, make sure in the dropdown of the

Source editing is selected). See Commons:Polling templates for a complete list of polling templates. - If you meant something else, please clarify your question. HyperAnd [talk] 11:52, 16 February 2026 (UTC)

see w:en:Wikipedia:Wikipedia pay rates#Pay tables for rates- Alexis Jazz ping plz 15:38, 16 February 2026 (UTC)- @Alexis Jazz: that's an overly cute answer to give to someone with whom you don't have a common language.
- @Gautsgeelani: no, this is an entirely volunteer project. Any content you post here can be used by anyone for any legal purpose, as long as they conform to the license you offer. - Jmabel ! talk 20:49, 16 February 2026 (UTC)
- @Jmabel: I'm sorry, I struck it. This question seems to get asked so often, it's almost like we should answer it in the edit notice or something. Is there a more serious resource (preferably with translations) you can think of that could be linked instead? There's https://wikimediafoundation.org/news/2018/08/22/dont-pay-for-wikipedia-articles/ but that's not from an editor's POV and only in English.
- @Gautsgeelani: no, regular users don't get paid by the WikiMedia Foundation to contribute. Some developers and lawyers are paid if employed by the WMF. Some people are paid by third parties to be a Wikimedian in residence, but if you have to ask, that's not you. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 04:12, 17 February 2026 (UTC)
- @Alexis Jazz: maybe Commons:How to#How does Commons run as a project? (which I wrote). But that's a bit lengthy and just in English. - Jmabel ! talk 03:01, 18 February 2026 (UTC)

[edit]Tried uploading but seems to have failed. Need some help please Nestadog (talk) 23:14, 16 February 2026 (UTC)
- @Nestadog: Looks like you hit a filter for trying to do an upload when you haven't yet supplied and confirmed an email address. - Jmabel ! talk 03:27, 17 February 2026 (UTC)
- That is a filter with no action. It does not prevent uploads. -- Asclepias (talk) 12:15, 17 February 2026 (UTC)
- @Nestadog: If you mean "File:John Langeloth Loeb Jr.jpg", then look at your talk page and at the deletion comment, which basically are to the effect that you did not provide evidence for the claims that you are the photographer and the holder of the copyright of this photo that is found elsewhere on the internet. -- Asclepias (talk) 12:15, 17 February 2026 (UTC)
- I am supplying the original file. There is no copyright persay the photo is the property of Amb John Loeb and
- was supplied by him to me for use in WIKI. Also how do I find the link to his WIKI? Nestadog (talk) 15:52, 17 February 2026 (UTC)
- @Nestadog This is a common misconception. You can release files just for use in Wikipedia, but we won't accept them. They must be free to use by anyone, anywhere, for any purpose. See COM:L. Creative Commons licenses are the easiest way to do this on Commons, and you can go through the UploadWizard for that. Since the image is widely used across the internet, you should also email VRT (read the page for information) proving that the image has truly been released by the copyright holder. First time uploading. Made a mess and I'm not sure how to fix it
[edit]The file Viossa Flag.png had a notice to create an SVG for it, which I did. However, I made two versions of the flag. One was an exact recreation of the original file (which due to a mistake (not by a Wikimedia user, but the external source) had a ratio of 593:398), while the other one was a one with a restored ratio of 3:2. The community the flag represents voted to upload the 3:2 version to replace the old one and keep the old ratio as an alternate version. The problem is that since I uploaded this fixed version, I uploaded an image that was NOT an exact SVG recreation of the old file. Later, we came to the conclusion that we should've uploaded the fixed ratio version as something like Viossa Flag (3-2).svg. Right now, the flags have already been marked for deletion, since the fixed version doesn't have any external sources yet to confirm it's actually being used. I'm currently waiting for a file mover to rename the files to hopefully fix the issue. Please let me know how we should proceed. Thanks a lot in advance for your time and help. JanLisaki (talk) 01:26, 17 February 2026 (UTC)
- Convenience links: File:Viossa Flag.svg, File:Traditional Viossa Flag.svg. - Jmabel ! talk 03:29, 17 February 2026 (UTC)
- And also: File:Viossa Flag.png.
- @JanLisaki: I've commented on the deletion request. I believe these will probably be kept.
The community the flag represents
: that is rather confusing. Meaning that the speakers of this pidgin dialect had a formal vote? Or meaning something else?fixed ratio
aren't all SVG files "fixed ratio"? How would you make a variable-ratio SVG? Or do you just mean "preferred ratio"?- It would be much easier to help you if you were clear what you want done. Is there a file you are asking to have renamed? If so, as a non-filemover, for you the "move" tool on the file page will simply allow you to make a request to have the file renamed. - Jmabel ! talk 03:41, 17 February 2026 (UTC)
- Thank you for the response.
- The community is built around the central Discord server, with probably 99% of speakers being part of it. I held an informal poll in this server for which the handful of eldest community members were notified (though anyone was able to vote). This poll asked whether the 3:2 or botched 593:398 should be uploaded on Wikimedia, with the other one being considered an alternate version. This poll turned out 25 to 11 in favour of the 3:2 flag.
- Yes, I meant "fixed" in the sense of "repaired, restored". Sorry if that was confusing.
- What I am planning to do now is rename the 3:2 flag to Viossa Flag (3-2).svg, and then rename the 593:398 flag to Viossa Flag.svg. I already requested a file mover. I can't request the second renaming yet because currently the 3:2 flag is still "occupying" the name Viossa Flag.svg.
- I was mainly wondering if this is a stupid way to go about things/if there is a better way to fix the mess this created. JanLisaki (talk) 10:12, 17 February 2026 (UTC)
- Just dropping a small note to vouch for this user and the situation in general. I am a moderator of the Discord server in question, called simply "Viossa Diskordserver," which has over 6,000 members at this time, hundreds of which message regularly. We did indeed have an informal poll about this (relatively minor) aspect ratio file problem, and this change is part of our group efforts to work on the Viossa article on Wikipedia [1] to remove the issues since it's a high importance article.
- Many thanks in advance to anyone on the helpdesk volunteer team who is able to assist with this small task!
- 💚💚💚
- JezzaHehn (talk) 17:20, 17 February 2026 (UTC)
- No, this is not "a stupid way to go about things."
- If you cannot make the move requests in the normal manner, spell out here what file(s) you want moved to what new filename(s), but please do that explicitly in terms of file names, not circumlocutions like " the 3:2 flag". - Jmabel ! talk 03:11, 18 February 2026 (UTC)
- Apologies for the prior language barrier confusion. The requests were indeed made by User JanLisaki using the normal manner of the "move" tool. This help desk post is to confirm that the procedure was being followed correctly. I will rephrase the request here.
- This is the original file: File:Viossa Flag.png
- User JanLisaki is requesting that File:Viossa Flag.svg be renamed, and I personally suggst "Viossa Flag 3x2.svg" based on other files in this page: Category:SVG flags with an aspect ratio of 3:2
- Following this, the flag File:Traditional Viossa Flag.svg is requested to be renamed "Viossa Flag.svg" to match the original PNG version of the file (linked above).
- Again thanks for your time. Looks like you are a veteran of Commons and I salute you for your years of service 🫡 JezzaHehn (talk) 03:30, 18 February 2026 (UTC)
- It looks like ChiK declined the move, most likely because the request gave no indication of the discussion here (e.g. via a permalink). @ChiK: do you still feel that the move was wrong after reading this? - Jmabel ! talk 07:46, 18 February 2026 (UTC)

- Do you have any advice on what I should do regarding the DR? JanLisaki (talk) 20:54, 18 February 2026 (UTC)

Patrolling question
[edit]Whne patrolling new files, should I mark a file as patrolled after I tagged it for deletion? The COM:PATROL page says you should, but that's generalized for all new pages. HurricaneZetaC 02:03, 17 February 2026 (UTC)
- Yes. If you've marked it for deletion, it doesn't need another patroller to take a look at it. - Jmabel ! talk 03:53, 17 February 2026 (UTC)
- HurricaneZeta, I think so, but if you tagged it for speedy deletion it may not matter if gets deleted before any other patroller would look at it. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 04:23, 17 February 2026 (UTC)
- @HurricaneZeta when you click on [Mark as patrolled] it means that you as a patroller have checked it. You have to mark it as such if it is ok, or if you have reverted that particular edit or if you have nominated that certain file for deletion or anything like that. It takes that away from the unpatrolled log. Shaan SenguptaTalk 11:51, 26 February 2026 (UTC)

Deceased fathers' art photos
[edit]My father died in 1989 and gave me, (his son) the artwork he painted. I promised him that I would get his story and art out to the world. Can I post photos of his work on the site? I am new to Wikipedia. Thank you. A.R. Loomis (talk) 01:08, 20 February 2026 (UTC)
- Yes. Presuming no other relative has claim to have inherited the copyright, you have rights to license and share your father's work. Commons even has license templates for such situations, eg {{Cc-zero-heirs}} (for basically releasing to public domain) or {{Cc-by-sa-4.0-heirs}} (for requiring attribution). Cheers, -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 02:06, 20 February 2026 (UTC)
- If the main thing you are going to be doing here is uploading his work, I recommend explaining that (and your relation) on your user page. Also: Infrogmation's response presumes that your father's work is in scope for Commons. If he was at all a notable artist, it would be. Otherwise, it might not be: works by the average person who paints, even the average person with an art degree, would not be in scope. - Jmabel ! talk 06:59, 20 February 2026 (UTC)

About CC BY-SA 2.0
[edit]I have a picture that was shared under CC BY-SA 2.0. I airbrushed some objects in it. Do I upload it as "created by me"? When I select that, the box where you're supposed to put in the name of the original author is not shown; which confuses me since the license requires giving attribution to the author. Baltalı İlah (talk) 18:14, 23 February 2026 (UTC)
- @Baltalı İlah In the UploadWizard I think you should click that it was made by someone else, released under CC BY-SA 2.0, and in the author field enter the author's name and (modifications made by Baltalı İlah). Since it's a ShareAlike license, if your changes are significant enough to get copyright protection on their own those changes should also be licensed under CC BY-SA 2.0 or a compatible version. HurricaneZetaC 18:33, 23 February 2026 (UTC)
- Also: when you know the end result you want and can't get it out of Special:UploadWizard there are basically two ways to go:
- use Special:UploadWizard, then hand-edit afterward.
- skip Special:UploadWizard entirely, use Special:Upload and fill everything in by hand before uploading. I normally use Special:Upload, and have used the Wizard only to experiment with it. My usual workflow is to copy the Wikitext of a similar file, paste that into Special:Upload, and edit it there before uploading. - Jmabel ! talk 20:58, 23 February 2026 (UTC)

article submission
[edit]I have a written article for upload It includes photographs from personal items regarding the company referenced. They are not critical to the article, but make it more interesting. Statements in the article include citations, but sources are old and not online. Kristine Weis (talk) 20:10, 23 February 2026 (UTC)
- @Kristine Weis:
- Is this about Draft:Infanseat Company/Infant carriers or something else?
- Is there a question here about Wikimedia Commons (the site on which you are asking this)?
- For what it's worth, there is no problem with using offline sources in the English-language Wikipedia, as long as they are correctly cited. I do not see any proper citations in your draft there, but that is an en-wiki issue, not a Commons issue.

Copyright of an ancient photo with no copyright
[edit]Hello. Using AI I have created a restored version of a well spread and known photo an historical venezuelan character. This person died over 70 years ago —actually 125 years—, so as far as I know his image is free to use, yet I was warned that my image might be deleted. I was totally clear about the fact that the image was created using AI and that the original work is not mine but a extremely low quality image at Wikipedia. How do I state the Copyright of this image correctly? Salvadoroff (talk) 10:51, 24 February 2026 (UTC)
- Hi, the issue at File:Gottfried August Knoche (s.f.).png was just that you weren't clear enough about the original work; you'd said it was "un retrato de estudio vintage" without saying where it specifically came from, and why you believed it to be in the public domain.
- I've now updated the file's description and copyright status based on the response you gave on your talk page. Belbury (talk) 11:26, 24 February 2026 (UTC)
Structured data: copyright license
[edit]So I uploaded File:Archive.is malicious DDoS code screenshot.png and noticed it got added to the hidden Category:Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike missing SDC copyright status. Tried to add structured data:
I get the following errors:
Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International
[edit]An entity with copyright license should also have a statement for copyright status with one of the following values:
- copyrighted
- copyrighted, dedicated to the public domain by copyright holder
- no known copyright restrictions
- not yet determined
copyright status
[edit]An entity with copyright license should also have a statement for copyright status with one of the following values:
- copyrighted
- copyrighted, dedicated to the public domain by copyright holder
- no known copyright restrictions
- not yet determined
copyright status is not a valid qualifier for copyright license – the only valid qualifiers are:
- start time
- end time
- applies to part
- work available at URL
- object named as
- reason for deprecated rank
- reason for preferred rank
- title
- author name string
- latest start date
- ...
Values of copyright license statements should be instances of copyright license (or of a subclass of it), but copyright status currently isn't.
I also tried to add copyright status as a qualifier of the license and remove the copyright status item, but it resulted in a different error:
An entity with copyright license should also have a statement for copyright status with one of the following values:
- copyrighted
- copyrighted, dedicated to the public domain by copyright holder
- no known copyright restrictions
- not yet determined
copyright status is not a valid qualifier for copyright license – the only valid qualifiers are:

- work available at URL
- object named as
- reason for deprecated rank
- reason for preferred rank
- title
- author name string
- latest start date
- ...
So, how do I get rid of these errors? I just want to say in the structured data that it's copyrighted CC-BY-SA-4.0, but this is super confusing. Amberkitten (talk) 17:22, 24 February 2026 (UTC)
- @Amberkitten: my own suggestion to minimize frustration here: just delete the SDC you tried to create for copyright, and let the bot do it. Those "missing SDC" categories are mainly for the benefit of a bot. Yes, there would be ways to work through this by hand, but I see no good reason for a human to take time for what a bot does well. - Jmabel ! talk 17:41, 24 February 2026 (UTC)
- Thanks. Someone fixed this for me already but next time I'll just leave it be. Amberkitten (talk) 01:14, 25 February 2026 (UTC)
Can I upload this?

WalnutBloom (talk) 17:33, 24 February 2026 (UTC)
- @WalnutBloom Sure, see {{MIT}}. HurricaneZetaC 17:42, 24 February 2026 (UTC)
- (cross-posted) @WalnutBloom: Typically yes, but it is possible that a particular screenshot contains other copyrighted content. For example, if a browser were released under the MIT Software License, that wouldn't magically license every page on the Internet if shown in the context of that browser. - Jmabel ! talk 17:44, 24 February 2026 (UTC)

Saiō and copyright
[edit]I emailed Meiwa City and asked for permission to use drawings on their website of the saiō's. I am allowed under the notion that it's only used in Wikipedia. How do I:
A. Find the appropriate tag. These images are allowed used in Wikipedia in high quality. Just nowhere else (I will include all the appropriate credits that they have asked for and what not when uploading).
B. Verify that I have permission. Is there an email I can forward the one I got to prove that I have the needed permissions to upload these? Camillz (talk) 16:00, 25 February 2026 (UTC)
- @Camillz Unfortunately, we cannot allow images only for use on Wikipedia. All images here need to be free to use by anyone, for any purpose, anywhere. Creative Commons licenses are the easiest way to do that here. If they are not willing to release their work under such terms, they cannot be hosted on Commons. You can upload them as fair use on a Wikipedia that allows them, the enwiki policy is at en:WP:F. HurricaneZetaC 16:04, 25 February 2026 (UTC)
- Could I upload the images under a non-free use license? So they can be used on the article related to the specific saiō? Camillz (talk) 17:42, 25 February 2026 (UTC)
- I'm not familiar with them, but if they follow the policy, you can upload them locally (not on Commons) using en:WP:File upload wizard. HurricaneZetaC 17:50, 25 February 2026 (UTC)
- Before I do anything I'll explain better. The saiō were Japanese princesses chosen to be the priestesses of Ise Jingū shrine. The role ceased to exist in the 13th century. Very few have depictions, hence why I wanted to find some and upload . Camillz (talk) 18:21, 25 February 2026 (UTC)

S.V.G. works on most browsers, but not on here.
[edit]
I recently created a vector image File:Colour 18-col PT with labels.svg by hand, but what you'll notice is that the texts "La to Yb" and "Ac to No" is a bit too high. It doesn't appear this way on Firefox, Chromium or Microsoft Edge when opened. It seems Commons has trouble recognising the attribute dominant-baseline="central". I encourage clicking on "Original file" (or here) and seeing if it works on your Internet browser. Is this a common bug and what should I do? Lekritz (talk) 16:25, 25 February 2026 (UTC)

How does uploading photos from Ebay work?
[edit]I often find that publicity photos or black and white photos of celebrities are frequently uploaded from Ebay and I was wondering how does that work? Do I need to purchase these pictures or if a picture is from a certain year and before it's fair to upload without buying the photo? I'm asking because I'd really like to see these two (if possible) images of Sondra Lee Image 1 and Image 2 uploaded to Commons. Just generally curious how EBay photos work and if it's similar to uploading pics from Flickr so to speak. Sorry if it's a dumb question :) TDKR Chicago 101 (talk) 18:27, 25 February 2026 (UTC)
- @TDKR Chicago 101 Have you ascertained that the eBay seller is the one who took the picture? i couldn't find it elsewhere through traditional methods, but it may have been published before offline and could be in a newspaper archive or something.
- That image isn't under a free license and is without further information, so you'd have to contact the seller or do some digging. We can only accept images which are under a free license or in the public domain (same thing goes for Flickr images - we can only accept when they're marked as under a free license and can't accept ones marked as "All rights reserved" or with CC- NC or ND licenses). HurricaneZetaC 19:28, 25 February 2026 (UTC)
- I was just looking at the first image, but for the second image it's from a store that sells these cards in mass, so they're very likely not the copyright holder of the image. There are a few situations in which images published between 1931 and 1989 can be public domain due to not complying with required formalities, and these are listed in the COM:Hirtle chart. However, it's hard to deduce that from the limited information given there unless you can find those images elsewhere.HurricaneZetaC 19:30, 25 February 2026 (UTC)

Relisting deletion discussion
[edit]I'm much more familiar with the enwiki deletion process, but is there an equivalent to en:WP:RELIST here? My deletion request here has been stuck without comment or action for over 6 weeks now, and I wasn't sure if there was any way to push it forwards. Ahecht (TALK

Not correct display of country in PNG previews
[edit]File:Winter Olympic Games Medal Nations1.svg
After updating a world map (for Winter Olympics) as an SVG file, all countries are displayed with correct colors when opened in full resolution. The thumbnail and PNG previews also display all countries correctly except for Kosovo. The incorrect display of Kosovo in the PNG-previews was already an issue in previous versions, which I attempted to fix, since other countries also had to be updated”, but unfortunately, it was unsuccessful. Miria~01 (talk) 23:32, 25 February 2026 (UTC)
- Problem solved: The SVG contained a CSS class for only partially recognized countries, which prevented that country from being rendered correctly as a PNG. Miria~01 (talk) 01:48, 26 February 2026 (UTC)
