Haru no umi was composed by Michio Miyagi in 1929, originally for koto and shakuhachi. It is considered to be one of Miyagi’s most well-known pieces and can often be heard at New Years and other celebrations.
Miyagi was inspired to write this piece based on his childhood memories of the Tomonoura Sea before he went blind.
This is one of my earliest performances of the piece. Miyagi’s beautiful compositions continue to inspire me and allows me reflect on using sound to create colors, forms, and sailing in an endless ocean of possibilities.
