Description
Every Rose Has Its Thorn is a power ballad by the American glam metal band Poison, released in October 1988 as the third single from their second album Open Up and Say… Ahh!. It is the band’s signature song, and also their only number-one hit in the US, reaching the top spot of the Billboard Hot 100 on December 24, 1988, for three weeks. It also charted at number 11 on the Mainstream Rock chart and number 13 in the UK.
The song expresses the anguish and sorrow of lost love, using the metaphor of a rose with thorns to symbolize beauty accompanied by pain. The lyrics were inspired by a night when lead singer Bret Michaels called his girlfriend on a pay phone and heard a male voice in the background. He realized she was cheating on him and wrote the song in a laundromat as a result.
Poison is a glam metal band formed in 1983 in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania. The most successful line-up of the band consists of Bret Michaels (lead vocals and rhythm guitar), C.C. DeVille (lead guitar and backing vocals), Bobby Dall (bass), and Rikki Rockett (drums). The band has sold over 65 million albums worldwide and is known for their high-energy live shows and flamboyant image.
Did you know that Poison’s members once had a backstage brawl with their rivals Mötley Crüe, who accused them of stealing their look and sound. The fight started when Poison’s C.C. DeVille threw a drink at Mötley Crüe’s Nikki Sixx, who retaliated by punching DeVille in the face. The two bands then engaged in a chaotic melee that involved hair-pulling, biting, and kicking. The security guards had to intervene to separate them, and both bands were left with bruises and cuts. The incident only fuelled the animosity between the two glam metal giants.
