Description
American ragtime composer Scott Joplin’s “The Sycamore” was written and published in 1904. The title of the piece is influenced by Joplin’s classical training under his teacher Alfred Ernst, who also served as the director of the St. Louis Choral Symphony Society. Ernst visited Joplin’s home city of Sedalia, Missouri in 1900. Upon their first meeting, Ernst immediately felt impressed by Joplin’s musical gift and offered to take Joplin under his tutelage. The young and budding composer eagerly accepted, and in 1901, moved to St. Louis to hone his musical skills with Ernst.
