When people mention Southern Rock, two bands immediately come to mind. Lynyrd Skynyrd and The Allman Brothers. Both these bands have a lot in common. Musically they are both brilliant, they have both gone through immense tragedy in the 70's, and they have both been a training camp for many virtuosic guitar players. Duane has achieved legendary guitar status among greats like Jimi Hendrix partially due to his untimely death at such a young age, but also because he has been featured on so many other important albums including the Derek and the Domino's album Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs.

Live at the Fillmore is often sited as the greatest Live Rock album of all time. The live version of Whipping post is also often sited as the bands greatest achievement, but I still really like the original version. It has a real dark, and sorrowful feel that I really resonate with.
