Description
Notice how for this work, it is labeled as "A Concert Rag" both on the cover & the inside? Although Joplin had already been crowned as the "King of Ragtime Writers" years prior, to him the title meant more to him than just simply a showcase of his ability to write well crafted rags that fly off shelves with ease. With his sights still set on elevating Ragtime music & using his growing popularity to help him place it on a pedestal, 1904 would prove to be the start of his experimentation combining themes & techniques often seen in classical music with the complex syncopation that Ragtime had to offer.
As for "The Sycamore," it is without a doubt that the stellar work firmly showcases some of the most earliest examples of how Ragtime could ever be so modified to classify the genre as truly a form of classic music, with a strong passion for syncopation blended together with a musical melody sure to please the ears of anyone who it may come across.
